چکیده

We show how to combine statistically efficient ways to design discrete choice experiments based on random utility theory with new ways of collecting additional information that can be used to expand the amount of available choice information for modeling the choices of individual decision makers. Here we limit ourselves to problems involving generic choice options and linear and additive indirect utility functions, but the approach potentially can be extended to include choice problems with non-additive utility functions and non-generic/labeled options/attributes. The paper provides several simulated examples, a small empirical example to demonstrate proof of concept, and a larger empirical example based on many experimental conditions and large samples that demonstrates that the individual models capture virtually all the variance in aggregate first choices traditionally modeled in discrete choice experiments.

INCOMPLETE INTERVAL-VALUED HESITANT FUZZY PREFERENCE RELATIONS IN DECISION MAKING

In this article, we propose a method to deal with incomplete interval-valuedhesitant fuzzy preference relations. For this purpose, an additivetransitivity inspired technique for interval-valued hesitant fuzzypreference relations is formulated which assists in estimating missingpreferences. First of all, we introduce a condition for decision makersproviding incomplete information. Decision maker...

Costs of Choices 1 Running Head: PSYCHOLOGICAL COSTS OF CHOICES The Psychological Costs of Ever Increasing Choice: A Fallback to the Sure Bet

Two studies examine how the content of decision makers’ preferences may be affected by the provision of more rather than fewer choices. Evidence from controlled and naturalistic experiments support the hypothesis that, in the presence of a greater number of options, decision makers exhibit a preference for less risky alternatives. Drawing upon the natural variation in fund offerings that were a...

Involvement of Patients in Health Technology Assessment: Further Perspectives for Informing Decision-Makers

Health technology assessment (HTA) is an evaluative process used to inform technology-related policymaking in healthcare. Interest in involving patients in the HTA process is increasing. Patients can provide additional perspectives to those of other groups that are concerned with health technology. Information on patients’ perspectives is preferably obtained through reviews of published studies...

Adapting to the Destitute Situations: Poverty Cues Lead to Short-Term Choice

BACKGROUND Why do some people live for the present, whereas others save for the future? The evolutionary framework of life history theory predicts that preference for delay of gratification should be influenced by social economic status (SES). However, here we propose that the decision to choose alternatives in immediate and delayed gratification in poverty environments may have a psychological...

Preference-driven biases in decision makers’ information search and evaluation

While it is well established that the search for information after a decision is biased toward supporting that decision, the case of preference-supporting search before the decision remains open. Three studies of consumer choices consistently found a complete absence of a pre-choice bias toward searching for preference-supporting information. The absence of this confirming search bias occurred ...
